Driveway Ribbons

In concrete construction, driveway ribbons(often called edge ribbons, thickened edges, or turned-down edges) are the reinforced, thicker strips of concrete that run along one or both sides of a driveway. They provide extra strength where the slab is most vulnerable.

They are important because they:

  • Support the edges. The edges of a driveway experience high stress from vehicle tires, especially when cars drive close to the side. Thickened edges help prevent cracking and breakage.
  • Reduce cracking. By increasing the concrete thickness and often including reinforcing steel, ribbons help distribute loads more evenly and minimize edge failures.
  • Improve durability. They make the driveway more resistant to erosion, settlement, and damage caused by repeated vehicle traffic.
  • Help with soil movement. In areas with expansive or unstable soils, thickened edges can better resist shifting and heaving.
  • Increase lifespan. A properly constructed ribbon edge can significantly extend the service life of the driveway and reduce repair costs.

They're especially valuable if:

  • The driveway will support heavier vehicles (RVs, trucks, trailers).
  • The soil is weak or prone to movement.
  • The driveway has unsupported edges without curbs.
