Pouring Basics

A typical concrete pouring process includes:

  1. Site preparation – Excavate and level the area, install forms, and compact the base.
  2. Reinforcement – Place steel reinforcing bars (rebar) or wire mesh if required.
  3. Mixing and delivery – Concrete is mixed (or delivered by ready-mix truck) to the site.
  4. Pouring – Place the concrete into the forms as evenly as possible.
  5. Consolidation – Use a vibrator or tamping to remove trapped air and ensure the concrete fills all spaces.
  6. Leveling and finishing – Screed the surface, then float and trowel it to achieve the desired finish.
  7. Curing – Keep the concrete moist and protected for several days to develop strength. Proper curing is essential for durability.

Step - Step

Successfully pouring concrete in Chicago requires a methodical approach tailored to the region’s extreme weather and soil conditions. Follow these essential steps for a durable, long-lasting result.

  1. Prepare the Site Thoroughly
    Excavate at least 6–8 inches of topsoil and organic matter to create a clean base. Shape the area with a minimum slope of ¼ inch per foot away from structures to prevent water accumulation—critical in Chicago’s clay-heavy, moisture-retentive ground.
  2. Compact the Subgrade and Add Gravel
    Use a plate compactor to firmly press down the native soil, especially important in areas prone to shifting. Lay a 4–6 inch layer of crushed angular gravel to enhance drainage and resist frost heave during winter freeze-thaw cycles.
  3. Install Forms and Reinforcement
    Set sturdy wooden forms and secure them with stakes to contain the pour. Place rebar or welded wire mesh in the center of the slab using chairs to ensure structural integrity. Incorporate expansion joints every 8–12 feet to accommodate seasonal movement.
  4. Mix and Pour Air-Entrained Concrete
    Use a minimum 3,500 psi air-entrained concrete mix to protect against internal cracking caused by freezing water. Pour during stable weather, ideally when temperatures remain above 50°F for 72 hours post-pour.
  5. Finish and Cure with Climate Care
    After leveling and initial floating, apply a broom finish for traction on walkways or driveways. Cure the slab by keeping it moist and covered with plastic for seven days to prevent premature drying and cracking. Apply a penetrating sealer after 28 days to guard against road salts and moisture infiltration.

Longevity

  • Use angular gravel and compact recycle CA6  stable foundation
  • Pour during optimal weather—ideally when temperatures remain above 50°F for three consecutive days
  • Seal surfaces every 2–3 years with a breathable, penetrating sealer to resist moisture and deicing chemicals
  • Inspect annually for cracks, joint damage, and drainage issues
