Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at carmenandsonsconcrete@yahoo.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Wait at least 24–48 hours before walking on a freshly poured cement patio. While the surface may look dry, early foot traffic can leave impressions or disrupt the curing process. For heavier use like moving furniture or equipment, wait a full 7 days to ensure the slab reaches sufficient strength.

Reapply a high-quality, breathable penetrating sealer every 2–3 years. This is especially critical in regions like Carol Stream and across Chicagoland, where freeze-thaw cycles and deicing salts accelerate surface wear. A silane-siloxane sealer guards against water penetration and efflorescence while allowing vapor to escape, preventing spalling and cracking.

Cracks typically stem from rapid moisture loss, poor jointing, or inadequate base support. Control cracks by placing expansion joints at building connections and control joints every 10–15 feet. These create planned break points and reduce stress from temperature shifts and ground movement.

With proper installation, including a compacted base, control joints, and routine sealing, a cement patio can last 25–40 years. In northern Illinois, longevity improves when air-entrained concrete is used—it withstands repeated freezing and thawing far better than standard mixes.
